Phanggungfook
Phanggungfook is a recent MA graduate (2017) of City and Guilds Art School, London. Her work as a painter is strongly influenced by the decoartive arts and her textile design background, it influences not only what she looks at, but also how she physically produces a painting. Her work is highly decorative, it is flat, like a two dimensional freize. It is theatrical and vibrant, the joyful colour and expressive painting technique and her naive language requiring quick responses, all adds to the drama and raw emotions of her painting.
Phanggungfook's work reflects many cultures and influences, it represents the multiplicity of her life, her work is about intimacy and her emotions. The narrative behind her work is ambiguous and cryptic, creating another layer to explore. The underlying message is the everyday, stories and experiences we can all relate to. Dogs are a significant feature of her work, the message is obscured. She use dogs as metaphors for the people they represent.
Phanggungfook's practice has grown to rely on the phenomenon of selfies and social media. She uses selfies as a medium of self exploration, the selfies have energized her approach to portraiture, they are about hilarity and capturing the high spirits of her subject. The works are her interpretation on contemporary culture.
